__How to test your website in Multiple Browsers without Installing

January 23rd, 2008 · No Comments · how to, internet, web 2.0

This one comes in really handy when you design or redesign your site layouts. Specially with so many free Wordpress layouts available, it is absolutely mandatory for all bloggers to keep in mind about the end user browsing experience, in terms of the layout being stable (Techkeyla had a few problems-the sidebars had all scrolled down to the bottom, as IE doesn’t believe in resizing the images to fit the width. Had to resize them myself). But then, we cannot install all the possible browsers available and of course, not test them on multiple OS-s as well. Now, here’s the perfect solution to a complicated problem. Browsershots.org. This site enables you to test your site/blog on multiple browsers and their multiple versions available across three OS-s,viz. Linux, Windows and Mac OS. Among the listed browsers are Firefox, Opera, MS IE, Kazehakase, Epiphany, Firebird, Flock, Mozilla, SeaMonkey, Phoenix, Safari, BonEcho, GranParadiso, Galeon, Konqueror, Minefield,K-Meleon and Navigator. Here in the picture above, I tried testing Techkeyla across multiple browsers and it seems to be quite consistent in display. This is a open-source online service created by John C.Rocholl. To use it, all you need to do is type in the site address/URL in the provided address bar, and check the browsers you want to test your website with. You can select All, None, OS-wise, Gecko based browsers, or the Safari KHTML family. You can even set the ScreenSize from 640 pixels to 1600 pixels wide, the color depth, Javascript functions, Java enabled/disabled and Flash enabled/disabled. Once you are done with the selection, hit Submit. Now, the request goes to a job queue, and distributed computers running different OS-s will open the websites in their browsers and capture the screenshots. These screenshots are then uploaded on the page. You can view the screenshot by just hovering/rolling your mouse-over the thumbnails , or you can download them all in a Zip file.

Additional features:- You can even go to the Screenshots Tab and view the recent sites that have been tested. What’s so great about it? You can actually get to see some really awesome site designs, coz most of the sites tested are more than often of Web-Designers than bloggers like me and you which reminds me of the biggest benefit-seekers of this online service-the Web designers.
Go to the Queue tab, and you can view the Request Queue and the Pending requests, the Uploads per hr/per day/per browser. The Factories tab shows you the multiple computers carrying out the entire procedure and the time taken by them in the last request, and the average performance time. The Search tab shows the last 60 tested sites enlisted. Of course, it also has a search bar to search. All inall, this has been really helpful. Happy Testing!
